Keep Outdoor Plumbing Out of the BBQ

How Clogged Pipes Can Ruin Spring Fun

Spring is here, and the weather is finally nice enough to go back outside. One thing that homeowners may have neglected this winter is the outdoor plumbing system. Harsh temperatures can cause major problems in outdoor pipes, and those will break at the worst times. Better to clear it out now than swim through the barbecue later.

Outdoor Plumbing Fixtures

Over recent years, outdoor plumbing fixtures have come a long way. Contrary to popular belief, there is a big difference between fixtures suitable for outdoor use and those used in the home.

  • Spigots and Hose Bib Faucets: Traditionally, these compression valves are standard for most homes that are not in freezing climates. While they work for basic outdoor needs, homeowners who spend a lot of time outside may require a more specific fixture.
  • Frost-Proof Faucets: For those who live in extremely cold climates, a frost-proof fixture is a must. These can stop the water from freezing inside the pipes by keeping the water inside a warmer environment when it is not active.
  • Anti-Siphon Faucets: Another standard option for an outdoor fixture is the anti-siphon faucet. A valve inside the fixture keeps debris from entering the water. In some states, having an outdoor faucet without one of these valves is illegal.

Depending on the needs of the outdoor system, one may need different piping materials. Many outdoor systems do not require hot water and can use basic piping that does not have to endure the heat. However, if the water outside is going to be heated, an alternative material will need to be considered.

Outdoor Pipes Get Clogged Too

Because these pipes are outdoors, they may have a higher chance of becoming clogged. Leaves and other debris can easily find their way into the piping. If the weather turns cold, snow and ice can accumulate in the drains as well. These can affect the drainage into the home as well.

If the drainage pipes are covered with a screen or grate, these can also become clogged with debris. Even tree roots can worm their way into the gutters or pipes and cause a barrier to the water flow. Systems that are clogged with mud or leaves can often get cleared by professionals who used hydrojetting to increase water flow.

Hydrojetting Can Save the Day

Just as with a home system, one can unclog outdoor plumbing systems through several professional methods. One of the most common and effective ways is hydrojetting. A hydrojet is a snake-like piece of equipment that uses high-pressure water jets to remove clogs from any pipe.

While it can be tempting to use one of these as a homeowner, it is much safer and cost-efficient to call a professional. If hydrojetting does not work, there could be tree roots blocking the drain, or the pipe could even be broken. If left unchecked, a clogged outdoor pipe could lead to major flooding and expensive repairs.
